What this site collects about you, and what it asks first.
Cookies, and the choice you are given
The pages themselves set no cookies. The one exception is audience measurement, which is off until you press Accept on the bar at the foot of the page. Press Refuse, or ignore it, and no cookie is written and no request leaves for anyone but us. Your answer is remembered on your own device, not in a cookie, and you are asked again after six months.
Nothing loaded from third parties, unless you say so
Every font, stylesheet, script and picture on these pages is served from this site. Fonts are not loaded from Google, and video thumbnails are copied here rather than fetched from YouTube, so opening a page tells nobody but us that you did. Only if you accept audience measurement does anything at all load from outside.
If you accept: Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to see how many people visit, which pages they read and roughly where in the world they are. Google shortens your IP address before storing it, and we have not turned on advertising features, so nothing here follows you to other sites. The data is held by Google LLC and by Google Ireland Limited; transfers outside the EU rest on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. We keep it for fourteen months.
Changing your mind
You can change your answer at any moment, in either direction, with the button below. Accepting starts the measurement; refusing stops it and deletes the record of your choice from this device. Clearing your browser storage has the same effect and means you will be asked again.
Links that leave the site
The footer links to our pages on LinkedIn and YouTube, and news items link to the publications that wrote them. Those load nothing until you click them; once you do, you are on their site under their terms.
Server records
Our host keeps ordinary technical records of requests, including IP addresses, for security and to keep the site running. They are not used to build any profile of you.
If you write to us
An email to us is kept for as long as it takes to answer you and to keep a record of the exchange. It is not added to any mailing list and it is not passed to anyone else.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you may ask what personal data we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, withdraw your consent to audience measurement and object to its use. Write to us and we will answer. You may also complain to the CNIL, the French data protection authority.
One exception, and it is not yours
The private area where we write articles uses a single cookie to keep whoever is logged in signed in. It is only ever sent to that part of the site, never to any page you can reach.
